Hello, I’m Joanne – a jeweller based on the edge of Dartmoor in Devon. creating handcrafted silver pieces from my workshop.
For the past three years I have been learning, designing, and refining my craft, exploring a variety of traditional and modern techniques including Japanese mitsuro hikime wax, filigree, silver casting, and keum-boo — the ancient art of fusing 24k gold foil onto silver.
My filigree jewellery is intricate and detailed, with each piece a unique, one-of-a-kind design and the mitsuro hikime work is led by the way the wax is formed when folded and twisted. These one off designs are then sent to be cast in silver. They can be a complete piece such as a ring or cut and reshaped to produce pendants and earrings. Continuing the Japanese theme I have now started to make and offer Japanese braids (Kumihimo) for some of my pendants instead of a chain. These are created on a marudai (Japanese loom) and I use silk thread.
The making process may show signs of workmanship, however these are not faults but an indication that everything handcrafted is unique and not mass produced.
I work exclusively with recycled silver, reusing even the smallest scraps by melting and casting them into new creations. I use a combination of Argentium, Sterling, and Fine silver. Argentium is a higher-grade silver than sterling that resists tarnish and offers hypoallergenic properties.
My inspiration comes from the natural world — from my garden, the rugged coastline, and the moors of Devon. The way the sea leaves sand ripples, plants that have twisted stems and the formation of rocks all contribute to my ever busy mind!
Each piece is made to be worn and loved — whether every day or for life’s special occasions. From meaningful bridal gifts and anniversaries to birthdays and celebrations, my jewellery is designed to mark moments and create lasting memories.
